Growing an Integrative Dermatology Practice

Are you interested in learning more about how to incorporate integrative medicine into your current practice model?

gift yourself an integrative dermatology future

Many dermatologists experience the same issues in their practice: burnout and many patient questions on topics that were not taught in residency. The amount of time spent with patients, the lack of up-to-date research on nutrition and alternative treatments that patients seek, more difficulty in connecting with patients with quicker visit requirements, and other factors contribute to a growing sense of dissatisfaction among professionals in the medical community. LearnSkin is a dedicated group of dermatologists and integrative medicine practitioners on a mission to support professionals in dermatology by providing accredited integrative CME content, the latest scientific research, and treatment options all online!

The LearnSkin Solution

The Integrative Dermatology Certificate Program (IDCP) is the only program of its kind in the world. A 9-month CME granting intensive designed by dermatologists for dermatologists who want to make a lasting change in the trajectory of their medical practice and elevate patient care.

The IDCP helps bridge the gap between what patients are asking for and what dermatologists learn in medical school or the conventional practice experience. As an immersive program, the IDCP provides hands-on, practical solutions for dermatologists looking to start an integrative practice, expand their offerings, or advance their knowledge of integrative medicine within dermatology.

Who Will You Work With?

IDCP’s founding faculty includes the first-ever Board-Certified Integrative Medicine practitioner and Board-Certified Dermatologist, Dr. Apple Bodemer. Board-Certified Dermatologist, Medical Acupuncturist, and founding Director of the Chicago Integrative Eczema Center, Dr. Peter Lio. And Dr. Raja Sivamani, a Board-Certified Dermatologist and Ayurvedic Practitioner. With years of experience in clinical dermatology and research, our core faculty created a curriculum that distills decades of hard-earned experience into practical and applicable course materials.

Why Should You Care About Integrative Medicine?

As integrative medicine grows in popularity and patients continue to ask about alternative and complementary treatment options, it is more important than ever to be well-versed in the latest research and treatment options. Integrative, complementary, and alternative medicine is often used to describe a similar concept, the ‘whole-person’ approach. Or simply put, a practice that incorporates all aspects of health, including external and internal factors, when assessing and prescribing treatment options. This may include looking at a patient’s psychological health, diet, environmental stressors, or physical exercise to find a long-term treatment protocol that the patient can keep up with. The skin is often an external representation of what is occurring internally and can be a great resource in proactively addressing patients’ overall health.

Integrative Medicine
Two areas in which modern western medicine training is significantly behind are nutrition and diet. In a study published in 2012, poor diet was tied to nearly half of U.S. deaths from heart disease, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes in the Journal of the American Medical Association. One 2015 study of 121 medical schools in the Journal of Biomedical Education asserts that less than a third of medical schools included in the survey provided the recommended 25 hours of nutrition information. So while the need for nutrition education continues to rise, the medical education system needs to catch up on delivering more robust training in nutrition. The current medicine model assumes that practitioners will refer patients to dietitians. The reality is that many do not, and if they do, there’s no guarantee that patients will follow through on consulting a dietitian. Contributors, including additional fees, planning, and scheduling, hinder people from moving forward with their medical treatment. Integrative medicine aims to bridge the gap between what is learned in medical school and what the needs are in clinic by streamlining treatment processes and providing medical practitioners with the skills needed to help their patients with diet management and nutrition.
